Sarbajanin Durga Puja
A Legacy of Faith, Devotion, Culture & Togetherness
For nearly five decades, Sarbajanin Durga Puja at China Basti Kali Bari has been a cherished celebration of faith, tradition, culture, and community spirit.
The journey began in 1979, when the first Durga Puja was organised at China Basti Kali Bari. Since then, the celebration has continued year after year, becoming an integral part of the cultural and spiritual life of the community.
Organised by the Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee in association with China Basti Kali Bari, the annual celebration brings together devotees, families, friends, volunteers, and well-wishers in a shared expression of devotion to Maa Durga.
What began as a community celebration has grown into a cherished tradition spanning generations—one that preserves our cultural heritage while continuing to evolve with the changing times.
Celebrating the Divine Power of Maa Durga
Durga Puja is one of the most revered Hindu festivals dedicated to Maa Durga, the divine embodiment of Shakti, strength, courage, compassion, and righteousness. The festival commemorates Maa Durga's victory over Mahishasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil and the victory of righteousness over injustice. Beyond the rituals and celebrations, Durga Puja carries a deeper spiritual message. It reminds us of the strength within us to overcome challenges, stand for what is right, and move forward with courage and compassion. The arrival of Maa Durga during the sacred autumn season brings with it an atmosphere of devotion and joy. The sound of the dhak, the fragrance of flowers and incense, the chanting of sacred mantras, the glow of lights, and the gathering of devotees together create the unmistakable spirit of Sarodiya. At China Basti Kali Bari, this spirit is celebrated through prayer, tradition, culture, and collective participation.
Our Journey Since 1979
1979 marks the beginning of the Sarbajanin Durga Puja tradition at China Basti Kali Bari. Over the years, the celebration has grown alongside the community. Generations have participated in the puja, creating memories that continue to connect families and individuals with China Basti Kali Bari. The journey has been shaped by the devotion and dedication of countless people—committee members, volunteers, devotees, supporters, families, and well-wishers—who have contributed their time, effort, resources, and prayers. Each year has added a new chapter to this journey. Today, the Durga Puja stands not only as a religious celebration but also as a living symbol of community heritage and continuity.
A Tradition Passed Through Generations
One of the most beautiful aspects of China Basti Kali Bari's Durga Puja is the connection it creates between generations. Those who participated in the celebrations in the early years carry memories of a different time, while today's younger generation brings new energy and enthusiasm to the same cherished tradition. Children who once came to the puja with their parents grow up to become volunteers and organisers themselves. Young members learn traditional practices from their elders, participate in preparations, and gradually take responsibility for carrying the legacy forward. This continuity gives the celebration a special meaning. It reminds us that heritage is not simply something we inherit—it is something we preserve, practise, and pass on.
A Milestone in Our Journey: Silver Jubilee – 2004
In 2004, China Basti Kali Bari proudly celebrated the Silver Jubilee of its Durga Puja, marking 25 years of an enduring tradition. The Silver Jubilee was a memorable milestone that reflected the strength and continuity of the celebration. It was also an occasion to remember with gratitude the individuals and generations whose dedication helped establish and preserve the tradition. The journey from 1979 to 2004 laid a strong foundation for the years that followed.
Looking Towards the Golden Jubilee: 50 Years of Faith & Tradition
As we continue this remarkable journey, we look forward with enthusiasm and devotion to the Golden Jubilee in 2028, marking 50 years of Sarbajanin Durga Puja at China Basti Kali Bari. The Golden Jubilee will be more than a celebration of a number. It will be a celebration of five decades of faith, memories, devotion, service, culture, and community participation. It will provide an opportunity to honour the generations who nurtured this tradition, remember those who contributed to its journey, celebrate the present generation, and inspire the generations yet to come. The milestone will also reaffirm our commitment to preserving the values and traditions that have made this celebration an integral part of our community.
